What significance does the continuing development of digital media technology have for media institutions and audiences?

Media technology is improving all the time. There’s always something new and improved for audiences to buy which will have better quality things on there. The significance of developing them is because the quality of media technology is always getting improved, and most audiences prefer better quality films.
Things like 3D are continually trying to be improved so that you won’t have to wear the 3D glasses in the cinema, the screens will already be fixed and the image will be in front of you. Although more people prefer to watch films in 2d, people are still watching films in 3d. Some massive cinemas will only show 3d screens of a film which gives you no option whether to watch it in 2d or 3d. When 3d was first introduced you’d have to wear blue and red lens glasses, then when it was bought into the cinema people had to pay for their glasses and now as technology has improved in some places in the world you don’t need glasses.
Blue ray is made for giving better quality pictures from DVD’s, and the significance of having them is that people have now got HD TV with better quality picture and massive TV and sound system so it’s like bringing the cinema screen at home.
Films like avatar are made up of 70% CGI. The significance this has on media intuitions is because it’s a lot cheaper to computer generate things and also it makes it look more realistic by having the computer generate where it needs to go.
The film institutions are now bringing out a lot more films with are all CGI. This is because they’re cheaper to make and most films that are made like this are children’s cartoons which have a big audience. They continue to improve CGI because it’s getting use more and more in films.
Harry Potter is a massive four quadrant film which uses the technology of CGI, which continued to develop more throughout each of the films. The famous Hogwarts castle which bought the film to its massive success was actually computer generated to make it look big. However films like the inbetweeners doesn’t involve cgi in the making of the film, but it didn’t need this to have its massive success.

Is it possible for British films to compete with four quadrant US blockbuster?

Kick Ass;

The film Kiss Ass, had a low budget to make the film on, however it didn’t use low costing equipment to make the film e.g. filming equipment, set etc. The film is based on the comics of Marvel Comics, which is written by Mark Millar. There’s a very big difference between the actual film Kiss Ass and the comics Kiss Ass.
The director, Vaughan raised $30 million himself outside of the film industry, to help with the budget and costing of the film. Sony distributed the film. The film was actually filmed and made in London, however its set in Manhattan. They didn’t just film in London, to save money from the budget, as filming gunfire and fight sequences in Manhattan could be quite problematic, so they built a set at Elstree Studios which an enormous green screen. They imported the high resolution plates of Manhattan into a media composer which had amazing motion tracking tools, which also tracked the background. The director, Vaughan insisted of getting the highest quality of recording of the original production sound, even though they had a low budget. When filming with the audio, Vaughn would use multiple of radio and boom mics, and they’d often end up with eight to ten channels of audio work to work with. They use a cocktail of noise-reduction plug-ins from Waves, iZotope and Avid. They used pro Tools and HD, D-Command which allowed them to manage and control more of the project and allowed them to do much more and be more creative.
When writing the script, Millar didn’t want a happy ending, as they’d be a huge difference between the films Kick Ass, and the comics. The difference between them, it’s that in the film there’s almost a happy ending, however in the comics their isn’t. This is where the difference between the film and the comics comes in.
As they had a small budget, they took a usual step of writing the comic book at the same time the film was produced. This would help, as the book would just come out then the movie 6 weeks later, although this didn’t help with financing the film.
Kick Ass box office was $96,188,903. It was a popular film, having its target audience of teenagers. It was given a 15 rating. How to train your dragon was released at the same time of Kick Ass. How to train your Dragon was aimed at younger children, as it’s a children’s film. Although Kick Ass might appeal to a bigger audience, How to train your Dragon did better with a box office of $494,878,759. However, How to train your Dragon had a far bigger budget, giving them more things to work with.
Kick Ass didn’t have any big well known stars in the film, however it had Nicolas Cage, who was in the film due to debt problems. This would affect the sales of the film, as when a film has a big star more people are likely to go watch the film because they are in the film and also most films which have well known stars are in usually are good to watch and do well. The fact that Kick Ass didn’t have big names in the film, was probably due to the budget and saving the money for other things like set, costumes, props, cameras, recording etc. They would of saved a lot of money on the characters as they didn’t have any big known names in the film, which could be a reason why they didn’t do as good as they could of done.
A problem they had was they didn’t know how to market the film. Also the trailer, had humour in it, but it was miles away from anything in the spoof world. Another failure was with the comics which children will read, they wouldn’t be allowed to view the film in the cinemas.
The music is by, John Murphy, Henry Jackman, Marius De Vries and Ilan Eshkeri. These four names worked together on the soundtracks. John Murphy’s work was used on 28 Days Later and Sunshine. The film did better in DVD and Blu-ray sales, as well as the top movie download on iTunes since its release August 3rd. It was number one in the DVD and Blu-ray sales. A reason for so many sales on Itunes and DVDs would be because they children couldn’t watch it at the cinema, and now they can view it on the DVD/iTunes/Blu-Ray at home, without parents.
There were a large number of trailers, videos and other marketing materials prior to the release of the film. The film failed to perform as projected, and the blogosphere jumped at the opportunity to write bunch of snarky articles outlining the films financial shortcomings.
They failed at things like their audience awareness wasn’t big enough. The name Kiss Ass, wasn’t a recognizable name, and didn’t have a bigger brand appeal; it wasn’t representative of the general movie-going audience.
Most of the target audience weren’t old enough to take themselves into the film, and it wasn’t easy to sell to parents. Also the use of the ‘C’ word was something which the Americans didn’t like. People felt that the film was “morally benefit” due to the how the little girl acted. Another thing, people thought that the film lacked a broader social message.

The King Speech.

The poster to the right, the main thing that stands out to me is academy award winner Colin Firth. This is because he’s a well-known British actor. Colin firth is a popular actor and has starred in Bridget Jones, Mamma Mia and other romantic comedies. His facial expression is quite serious, this tells you that his character role is a serious role. His eyes are looking straight towards you, almost ‘scaring’ you, giving the poster a serious vibe. This phrase ‘God Save The King’ lets us know that he’s in some form of trouble. The expression of ‘God save the king’ is similar to the ‘Keep calm and carry on’ posters. This is symbolic as its telling the king to ‘’carry on’’ which links into the quote on the front ‘God Save The King’. Also the poster symbolic as it links into the film.
By having one of the starring roles on the front of the poster and seeing his facial expressions and body posture gives away information on his character. The poster shows a few on the stars that star in the film, having the two main roles ‘Collin Firth and Geoffrey Rush’ in bigger and bolder writing. The writing ‘God Save The King’ in placed in front of the photo of photo, allowing it to stand out more. The photo is like a background image, as it covers the whole page.

The post on the left is more detailed and there’s more going on in the poster. The Austrialian actor Geoffrey Rush who is the face of the poster stands out amongst all the writing as his body language and facial expressions are quite unusual and he’s looking away from you. Geoffrey Rush stars in Pirates of the Carribean.
The word ‘’Majestic’’ in bold at the top is telling the audience that the film is Entertaining. The line ‘’It’s simply fills you with joy’’ would catch a readers eye as when they’re going to the cinema to watch a film they’re wanting the film to have this effect on you. The bold words on the front on this poster stand out widely as they are the reviews/comments from people who have seen the film. This attracts the public eye because if people are saying the films ‘’Terrific’’ it would make you want to go and watch it.
The one word quotes are bigger and bolder, standing out better from the other two quotes which are longer. There are quotation marks on the words to show they’re quotes (reviews/comments) from people. The photo of
Geoffrey Rush is in colour and covers the whole of the posters.

The colour of the writing contrasts with the whole of the poster, and is also bold and eye catching. ‘The Kings Speech’ is in gold showing it’s about royalty and also that it’s the title of the film. The two main actors have been written above the title of the film, whereas the other starring roles have been placed underneath. The overall colour of the posters are quite simple but bold colours that contrast well together. The words and phrases which have been chosen stimulate interest of the audience and are all positive language. Collin Firth’s image is looking directly at the camera, this shows his important, portraying that he’s the king. Also how ‘God’ and ‘King’ are in much bolder and bigger writing would catch people’s eyes as they are important people. Whereas Geoffrey Rush is looking away from the camera, showing he’s the speech therapist.

This film appeals to a very wide audience, probably more of an older audience as from the trailers it looks like a serious film. The trailer doesn’t give away the storyline, however it shows you what the characters are like. The phrase ‘God Save The King’ tell the audience that he needs help. Throughout the film you watch him get saved from embarrassment from his stammer, which links in with the phrase. He is helped by an ordinary man, who has quite a quirky character role. He helps him conquer his stammer and he shows this by giving a massive speech at the end about the war.

The posters are simple and British, showing the audience it’s a British film. The language used on the poster is upper class, and also shows off the Genre as a historical drama. The posters are easy to read as they’ve chosen contrasting colours, which allow the writing to stand out well.

Semiology

Sunday 2 September 2012

Hello :)

Im Faye White, I've chosen media because I enjoy editing movies and films. I enjoy photography and editing the photos. Im studying Dance, Drama and Health and Social Care, as well as media.

I'd say my favorite band is One Direction, I enjoy listening to their music and they're good artists. Also because they work well as a band, and i love the fact they write their own music.

I'd say I also like Ed Sheeran, because the fact he can be placed on a stage with a guitar and sing infront of thosands without a band, just himself is amazing, and the music which he performs and makes always has a story to.

My favourtie tv program is 90210, because the cast are your typical stero-typed american people from Beverly Hills and it also has a good story line on each series.

My favourite film would have to be Dear John, as I like both of the main actors in this film; channing tatum and Amanda seyfried.  My favourite director would have to be Marc Webb, as I like all the films he's created. Films like The amazing spider man and 500 days of summer.

The only magazine i'd read would be fashion magazines, or magazines like 'Heat' and 'Now'

I tend to read tumblr blogs and blog recent photos and reblog other things onto my tumblr blog.
